Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Review

This is a great soundtrack as others have stated.

However, the version of Black Sheep contained in the album isn't the one used in the film. This is the original version by Metric, not the cover song by the actress for Envy in the movie. I will not speak ill of Metric, but because this is a movie soundtrack, I quite disappointed the movie version of Black Sheep isn't on this album, including all those, "Oh, yeahs."

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Overview

Original soundtrack to the 2010 motion picture features four new songs by Beck under the guise of Sex Bob-omb and two versions of a totally new Beck track. Also on the soundtrack are tracks by indie heroes Broken Social Scene, Beachwood Sparks and Frank Black - alongside classic Rock anthems from stalwarts Rolling Stones and T.Rex plus a stellar inclusion from Britpop kings The Bluetones.

Palance

Palance Review

It was a real pleasure to hear this album again after so many years. I was pretty much a novice engineer when I recorded this album in 1970. I remember being very nervous about working with such a famous person but he immediately put me at ease. He really was such a nice guy and a gentleman. I was greatly surprised to find that he had a very nice singing voice, something I did not always find in other actor/movie star types that I worked with. After listening again to this album after so many years I was pleasantly surprised that it turned out pretty danged good for a relatively new engineer.

Palance Overview

Best known as a legendary actor, Jack Palance did record an album in 1969 for Warner Bros. that recalls the wacky country-rock music vibe of Lee Hazelwood's albums of the same time period. Recorded in Nashville with the usual studio cats, the album is a playful country-rock romp not unlike other late 60's Nashville recordings. Fans of Lee Hazelwood, Johnny Cash and Scott Walker will love this album. Featuring Palance's self penned classic song 'The Meanest Guy That Ever Lived'. A 20 page booklet with new and detailed liner notes (and rare photos) is included. 11 remastered tracks. Water. 2003.

Best of Word Jazz 1

Best of Word Jazz 1 Review

Haunting me since I was a preschooler in the late `50's, from the sound of Ken Nordine's booming, string bass voice to his funny and frightening stories, right down to its paper collage cover, the original LP WORD JAZZ has lodged permanently in my psyche. I was delighted when the recording resurfaced in 1990, even if only in parts, on this compilation CD. At first I only revisited my old favorites, "Hunger Is From," a description of a sleepless, midnight raid on the refrigerator, complete with munching sound effects, "The Vidiot," a forecast, unfortunately, of the television addict I would become, "The Sound Museum," a dreamlike, wonderfully evocative "tour" of a series of aural exhibits and the artists who have created them, "Flibberty Jib," an immensely creepy portrait of religious zeal that reminds me of every facilitator of mass hysteria from Adolf Hitler to Jim Jones, and "Looks Like It's Going to Rain," in which the narrator invites the listener in to visit the noisy chambers of his brain. All of this is accompanied by the strains of cool jazz, with a tinkling piano here, noodling woodwinds there, and in several key places, some experimental electronic sounds and tape loops. Then I began to explore the other tracks on this CD, most of them new to my ears. My favorite of these previously unknown gems is "Faces In The Jazzmatazz," which I have listened to dozens of times now. Somehow it is so nostalgic that I have developed a false memory of having heard it before, somewhere in my distant past -- maybe I did, but I don't think so. Although the material on THE BEST OF WORD JAZZ, VOL. 1 is spoken, there is something so musical about Nordine's voice that, for me at least, I hear these pieces as songs, and can revisit them from time to time just as I can other favored music. The pleasure I derive from this album is so personal, and so connected to my childhood, that I don't know if I can recommend it to the uninitiated. One thing that anyone over the age of say, 30, might latch on to is Nordine's mellifluous baritone: it has been heard on more than just novelty recordings, as he has had a long career in voiceovers and narration on radio and television. So Ken Nordine will sound familiar even to those who have never heard his name.

I hope there's a Vol. 2 (may not happen, given the time that has elapsed since this CD was first released), and that it will include "Roger," a funny little nightmare scenario about a piano teacher that still gives me shivers when I hear it on my scratched up vinyl copy of WORD JAZZ.

Best of Word Jazz 1 Overview

You've heard Ken Nordine before, his immediate baritone resonating like the voice of God in countless radio and TV commercials, hawking everything from Taster's Choice to Murine. In the late 1950s, though, Nordine created "word jazz"--a combination of storytelling, sound painting, and pre-beat improvisation--as a less commercial, more personal outlet for his natural speaking talents. Best gathers the brightest of his four initial albums--material that found him somewhere between the prosody of Jack Kerouac and the arch satire of Nichols & May. As the title suggests, there's a light jazz backing behind Nordine's incantations--ranging from the lighthearted "Hunger Is From" to the disturbing, absurd scenario "Flibberty Jib" to the harrowing memoir "Confessions of 349-18-5171." Good, curious stuff. --Michael Ruby

Jerry Goldsmith: 40 Years of Film Music

Jerry Goldsmith: 40 Years of Film Music Review

There have been so many times when I thoroughly enjoyed the soundtrack of a movie I had gone to seen and checked to see who the composer was, I found the name of Jerry Goldsmith. I remember often thinking that guy could really compose some good music. Therefore, I got excited when I found this music compilation and couldn't wait to order it from Amazon.com. What I got was pretty much what I expected: over 280 minutes of great theme music from the movies and TV, some of which I remembered, but some completely new to me.

In all music from some 53 movies and television series is represented. In some cases, we get a musical suite or two or more selections from a given score but sometimes we must make do with only the main theme music. I would like to have heard more from the award winning or nominated Chinatown, Patton, Basic Instinct and Planet of the Apes (not included in this set) and perhaps less from The Blue Max, In Harm's Way, The Boys from Brazil or Star Trek®: Nemesis suites. Even so, there is plenty of good music. I would say 75 or 80 percent is thoroughly enjoyable and worth listening to again and again.

Highlights for me include stirring suites from The Wind and the Lion, Emmy winning QB VII, Star Trek®: The Motion Picture, Under Fire, The Sum of all Fears and Oscar® winning The Omen, as well as the main theme music from Basic Instinct, Capricorn One, Total Recall, The Waltons and Police Story. After years of wishing for it, I was finally able to add a representative Jerry Goldsmith album to my music library.

Jerry Goldsmith: 40 Years of Film Music Overview

Jerry Goldsmith's death in 2004 marked the end of one of the greatest careers in film composing. This lavish 57 track 4 CD set traces the path of his astonishing achievements and includes recordings conducted by Goldsmith himself. Featuring The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Philharmonia Orchestra, The National Philharmonic Orchestra, and The Daniel Caine Orchestra. Includes over 280 minutes of music.

It's Christmas Time

It's Christmas Time Review

I've owned this CD for years and play it every single Christmas. Don't buy it if all you are interested in is sound quality. This CD is for people who appreciate the authentic feel of what these artists sounded like over live radio broadcasts as received in living rooms all over the world via cranky Philco radios in the 1940s. No, the sound quality is isn't the overproduced sterilized flawless versions of these timeless classics we've become accustomed to. I give it five stars because it was everything I expected it would be when I bought it. For those with some imagination, it's easy to be transported by these broadcasts to another time when these recordings were the main holiday entertainment for troops overseas and their families at home. It's a piece of history.

Orient - Occident

Orient - Occident Review

This had been 'suggested' to me for so long I was sick of seeing it. Also, how good could a collection covering 1300-1800 really be? Secumbing to curiosity at last, I found musical treasure! The Occidental pieces come from the early part of that time frame while the Oriental pieces come from the entire range, thus there really is a peculiar unity to the album which delights and surprises every time I listen to it. The Orient here is mostly the Jewish and Muslim world and after listening to Hesperion XX/XXI for so long, this seems very familiar turf. It works and it works well. Guest artists help make this a musical trip to remember.

Tago Mago (Reis)

Tago Mago (Reis) Review

In 1971 Can released their third studio album (without counting the 1968 recordings "Delay") titled "Tago Mago" and it marked the debut of Japanese vocalist Damo Suzuki. The four remaining members stayed the same with Michael Karoli on guitar, Holger Czukay on bass, Jaki Liebezeit on drums, and Irmin Schmidt on keyboards.

The first song "Paperhouse" runs for seven minutes and a half displaying a prog-rock feel in the first section somewhat similar to something that Pink Floyd could have done but the distinctive vocals of Suzuki are already in place. Before long, the mood changes and Jaki's tribal drumming dominates while Karoli throws some lead guitar lines plus Suzuki's strange whisperings. In the coda, some tremolo-laden keyboard notes are repeated making for a great ending. Without warning, the next song out "Mushroom" comes in; a composition dominated by a great drum beat from Liebezeit featuring a metallic snare drum sound with a lot of reverb. Suzuki shines also here providing some simple catchy vocal lines. Karoli pulls out the violin to play a slightly dissonant note here and there but the thing to really pay attention here is the keyboard work from Schmidt. This is a great example of his textural style of playing!
After the fade-out, the sound of thunder and rain is heard. Soon, a cool drum beat kicks in plus the trade-mark atmospheric keyboard work. Damo's vocals are played backwards making for a dark and mysterious vibe. Towards the end the main structure shifts somewhat and Karoli delivers some mean bluesy licks till the fad-out. Excellent! The longest song clocking at 18:32 follows and it's called "Halleluhwah". Here, the band brings forward a psychedelic funk-rock sound with a killer drum rhythm that repeats nearly throughout its whole length. Listen carefully about four minutes into it... the drumming fades away and you'll hear a cool, short bridge with some nice piano runs before it goes back to the main pattern. This could be described as early trance-rock! Simply awesome!
From now on, things gets more avant-garde and abstract with "Aumgn", a seventeen-minute structure-less composition filled for the most part with experimental and strange electronic effects. Listen carefully during the first two minutes though...you'll hear a cool dark melody on guitar from Karoli! This is where he might have invented the post-punk style of guitar playing! Keyboardist Schmidt chants the song's title over and over in a droning manner and towards the end Liebezeit plays some tribal drumming. Great experiment!
The experimentation continues in "Peking O", another long composition (11:35) which puts Suzuki on the front singing some eastern inspired chants in the intro. This track is notable for the use of a primitive electronic drum machine. Some apparently Chinese inspired melodies follow and soon Suzuki comes in to do this wild scat singing! The first time I heard this, it made me laugh! But wait! Towards the end the whole thing sounds like it's going to collapse! The vocals get more manic and in addition, there's some dissonant keyboard lines and some screeching violin as well...or is it a guitar? Well, I'm not sure!
The last piece "Bring Me Coffee or Tea" closes the LP in a much more accessible fashion. The vocals are more melodic/controlled and the textural keyboard work really shines here. Karoli plays some cool lead guitar too throughout this nearly seven-minute jam. A great LP ending!

Can is essential listening for those who enjoy the experimental nature of Kraut-Rock and I'd say "Tago Mago" is a good place to start!
Thanks for taking the time to read!
Later...

Bossa Nova Brasil

Bossa Nova Brasil Review

My family and I are actually from Brasil. I found this CD at a Best Buy on sale for , and out of curiosity, I bought it. I LOVED it. My relatives loved it. The poster who said that the songs on this CD aren't authentic to Brasil obviously is not Brasilian. This CD got passed around my family so much, that I don't even know who has it anymore. I want another copy, which I plan to NOT share. So now I need to buy it again. It really is that good. I first bought it about 10 years ago, and it's still a hit with me and my family. One of the best.

Jerky Boys

Jerky Boys Review

lowbrow? homophobic? probably!
...but if you think these laughs are some sort of accurate pillory of gay people, you've missed the point. The reason these two pranksters took off, had more to do with their acumen for impromptu language; beautiful turns of phrase that were concise, memorable and startling. Like the Marx Bros, they show that there's quite an art to blending absurdity and contempt. Most who attempt the two are boorish, but the JBs prove there's an art to it. Some of the phrases they came up with still make me laugh. And their credulous call recipients pre-date the current examination of how dumb people have become.

Ego sum Resurrectio: Gregorian Chant for the Dead

Ego sum Resurrectio: Gregorian Chant for the Dead Review

From the foreword: ''the chants of the liturgia dufunctorum (Liturgy of the dead) originate from two celebrations: the Order of Burial and All Souls' Day on 2nd November. Nothing is known about these chants before the eight and ninth cnturies, because the manuscripts of that period only recorded the verbal texts of the readings and prayers. Yet, starting from the 10th century, music manuscripts reveal the existence of a repertoire that will consist of more than a hundred chants.''
This was some information. But now I must say that this cd is brilliant, excellent, of immense emotional power! It is one of the best gregorian chant recordings I've ever heard. So clean, pure almost ''otherworldly''. Featured inside are the complete lyrics in latin.
Technically the chants are sung by a cantor (Alessio Randon) and a female choir (Aurora Surgit).
But enough talking, just listen to the Requiem Aeternam and Epistula samples to be convinced of its beauty/greatness/ability to reach and quake your heart....

Take It Off! Strip Tease Classics Review

This is an excellent CD, featuring audio recordings of live performances by some of the finest strippers of recent years. Samantha Fox, Jo Guest, Maria Whittaker and many others are included here. Still, I can't help but feel that a visual element would have contributed to the overall atmosphere, so let's hope they re-issue this on DVD someday.

A musical celebration of the romantic and sensual art of the striptease, serving as a much-needed reminder that the age-old "art form" can be playful and fun for everyone above the age of consent! The only compilation of its kind, featuring a lenticular cover - just tilt the CD case and witness the illusion of a sweet yet sexy woman shedding her dress to reveal lingerie. For lovers only!

Merry,Merry Christmas

Merry,Merry Christmas Review

Even though I wasn't a mondo New Kids fan like seemingly every other early-teen girl back then, I did buy this album shortly after its release in that other dimension known as 1989 and I thought it was okay, yet it stuck with me for my not being all that crazy about it.

One *would* think that as you grow older, you'd outgrow the teen stuff (or the so-called bubblegum sound), but "Merry Merry Christmas" retains its charm for me all these years later and I'm very happy to have this album in my music collection again.

Now, there *are* some tunes that sound very dated such as "This One's For the Children" and "Funky Funky Christmas." Then again, the dated sounds of albums are what make, or should make, the listening experience complete for those who were around when it was originally released as well as for those who weren't even a thought.

The album cover captures the feel-good image of New Kids as well as the music itself, with pretty good renditions of Christmas classics such as "White Christmas" and "Little Drummer Boy." In that sense, the 1980's ended on a pretty good note (along with the rest of the string of solid pop albums released that year).

Listening to anything New Kids On the Block does bring a smile to my face. - Donna Di Giacomo

Best Loved Hymns

Best Loved Hymns Review

This was one of my Christmas gifts and I really looked forward to listening to it. I had just visited King's College, Cambridge back in August and really liked it--you should try to make it out there if possible.

Anyway, this CD was great to listen to. Some hymns are scored for orchestral accompaniment, choir and organ, while the majority of tracks are just for choir and organ.

Recorded in the King's College Chapel (the front cover has a great shot of the ceiling's trademark "fan" stone carving), the hymns are pure English sound--boys' treble voices along with men's changed voices singing with a pure, clean, straight tone. It's very sweet-sounding.

The hymns chosen are also great; "Be Thou My Vision," an Irish classic, appears along with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," and "Morning Has Broken" (later recorded by Cat Stevens).

The singing isn't especially elaborate--they're just simple hymns. They're orchestrated very well, however, and they sound great.

Religious people may prefer these recordings more in general--these are Christian hymns after all--but I think it's a great recording and is worth listening too, especially if you enjoy that English sound!

Italia

Italia Review

Botti's "Italia" CD is a lovely recording. It's soft & slow. Botti wrote the title track with David Foster which weaves a dreamy sonic landscape. Botti also wrote "Venice" with Dean Parks which makes me flash to Gato Barbieri's fine soundtrack for Last Tango In Paris: Original MGM Motion Picture Soundtrack. I've loved Botti's collaborations with Paula Cole. On his When I Fall in Love CD she sang the gorgeous "What'll I Do"; and on the soundtrack for August Rush: Music From The Motion Picture they teamed on the Billie Holiday classic "God Bless the Child." On "Italia," "The Very Thought of You" rises with a deft interplay between Cole's voice oozing with emotion and Botti's trumpet coaxing it forward, "I'm living in a kind of daydream, but I'm happy as a queen." That track and "The Way You Look Tonight" are my favorites with Botti bringing the classic melody into full sway. Rita Coolidge accented a samba rhythm for "Estate" on her delightful jazz CD And So Is Love. Botti transplants the track from Brazil to Italy with a lovely charm. "Italia" is slow & sensual, romantic & rewarding. Enjoy!

Ella Enchanted

Ella Enchanted Review

I liked the movie a lot and saw it for X-times. And surely have it in my collection. Of cause one of the most important things in movie is music.

And music is really amazing. Waited long to order this cd and finally did. Will put it on when have bad mood and then everything like dancing and singing around.

Cd worth listening, movie worth watching!
more then 5 stars from 5

Ella Enchanted Overview

"Ella Enchanted" showcases a hot lineup that includes the film's star, Anne Hathaway, who makes her singing debut by appearing on teen heartthrob Jesse McCartney's rendition of the Elton John/Kiki Dee hit "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart." Hathaway also performs bouncy covers of the 1976 Leo Sayer smash "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" and the 1977 Queen hit "Somebody To Love." All three tracks were recorded specifically for the film.

Additional highlights on "Ella Enchanted" include new tracks by singer-songwriter Darren Hayes, formerly of Savage Garden, ("Strange Magic"), punk-poppers Stimulator ("Magic"), rising new star Kari Kimmel ("It's Not Just Make Believe") and Radio Disney faves Jump 5 (who contribute a cover of the Katrina & the Waves' top ten hit "Walking on Sunshine"). Ella Enchanted also features "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson's stirring rendition of Aretha Franklin's "Respect," Disney star Raven's "True To Your Heart," Bryan Adams & Andrea Remanda duet ("If You Believe") and the Beu Sisters' "Once Upon A Broken Heart."

Everything You Want for Christmas

Everything You Want for Christmas Review

There is an old joke, A polish girl comes home pregnant,
Her mom says " Are you sure its yours? "
Well that's how I feel about Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's Christmas CD.
It's Christmas Classics in a swing style by the best American Swing band. They are a really tight unit. I drive everywhere for my job.
I am a repo man for an adoption agency.
One thing I hate is paying tolls. It's like throwing money out the window. But you won't be throwing money out the window with this CD.
I see a lot of Warning Billboards when I am in my car,
such as " Don't drink and drive", "Don't smoke when you are pregnant", and my favorite Warning billboard is " According To Jim is now on 5 nights a week!"
Well with this Christmas CD you need a warning label for the best song is a real toe tapper! Its Mr. Heatmiser from the Old Christmas Cartoon The Year Without a Santa Clause. Its a note for note swing remake.
You Know, they say Santa Clause was Polish because who else would wear a red suit?
Well you will be wearing a red suit too, a red suit of love for this CD.
Joey Callahan who says he is Philadelphia's biggest undiscovered comedian WWW.joeycallahan.com, turned me onto this CD. He said to me " Watch out for that doorknob!" I said " why?". He said " It'll turn on you!" So this cat knows his comedy. Joey also teaches comedy. He taught me!
Well this CD won't turn on you. It will warm your heart on a cold winters night.
This CD and the Home Alone Movies Christmas CD are my favorite collection of Upbeat Rock/ Swing christmas music.

Everything You Want for Christmas Specifications

Lay in a good round of cosmopolitans, ditch the rug and get ready to turn 2004 into 1944 with these retro swing kings. In an album where horns are king, the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Christmas disc will please fans and remind the elders that the big band sound has not left the building. While singer Scotty Morris is a bit too mannered at times, he does an adequate job of covering the Yule's coolest, including "Blue Christmas," "Merry Christmas Baby" and "Is Zat You Santa Claus?" and can write a seasonal tune worth returning to every year: Highlights include Morris' own "Rockabilly Christmas," the timeless "Christmas Time in Tinsel Town" and "Last Night (I Went Out with Santa Claus)." But with the Daddy's baritone sax master Karl Hunter blazing and the rhythm section fanning the yule log on "Jingle Bells (Cha Cha)," this might be the disc to jumpstart your holiday party -- even before Thanksgiving dinner gets in the oven. --Martin Keller

I Started Out As a Child

I Started Out As a Child Review

Our family really appreciates Bill Cosby's humor, which proves that a person doesn't have to be crude to be funny. His family stories are hilarious as always (everything from getting sneakers to his dad being The Giant), and his observations on society are right on the money. There are one or two swear words in it, but for the most part, his humor is appropriate for all, young and old.

Vol. 2-We All Live Together

Vol. 2-We All Live Together Review

I grew up listening to this music, so I was very excited to share it with my kids. I was delighted to find that they love it just as much as I did. They especially love "Listen and Move" and "The Muffin Man." "Listen and Move" is enough for me to buy this CD. It is a fun way to get the kids involved and active. We don't watch much tv, and I like to turn this on when they get restless. If I could only pick one CD for them to listen to, this would be it.

Music for Accelerated Learning Review

I initially purchased this CD for reading and keeping concentrated with the task in hand. So far it has done its purpose well. Im not gonna say that it is the only CD that will do the job, but it will shure help when it comes to keeping concentrated on your studies. It is not a distracting music but it set a mood of enjoyment even though you dont enjoy what you are reading. The intro is excellent to set a mind state and the second song gives you the rythim to keep reading effortlessly. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys listening to non vocalized music while reading or studying.

Music for Accelerated Learning Overview

Jim Brickman: Christmas Romance

Jim Brickman: Christmas Romance Review

This is a GREAT CD, if you love traditional Christmas music but hate organ music and those old-time choirs that always sounds like they're singing at a funeral. Jim Brickman takes all the classics and tweaks them into beautiful, recognizable but much more current music. I have all of his Christmas CDs and they are ALL great!!

Jim Brickman: Christmas Romance Overview

Set a romantic mood with this intimate piano collection from Jim Brickman, featuring seasonal classics and holiday originals.

The Three Musketeers: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

The Three Musketeers: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Review

A word of caution this album has one actual "song" which is the amazing ballad featuring Sting, Rod Stewart and Bryon Adams. Though the other tracks are songs they are instrumentals that are actually in the movie. Though don't let that turn you aside as they are all well done and each offer a wide variety of different musical emotions. Many of the tracks start off slow and quiet and then eventually become adventurious or more epic. 'M' Lady DeWinter' and 'All For One' being my personal favourite tracks. This is worth a listen especially seeing how I got it for .50 new still in original wrapping.

A View to a Kill

A View to a Kill Review

A View to a Kill is a great score from the legendary John Barry, who has done pretty much all of the James Bond films up until 1989. I wish he'd come back and do the score to the next James Bond film. A few pieces of music are missing though from the movie, such as when Bond is attacked in Siberia and escapes but they never finish the music. Another piece missing is where Bond and Tibbett arrive at the Zorin's chateau in France. I think the most important piece that's missing is when Stacy gets taken by Zorin for a ride in the blimp and Bond hangs on to the rope going to the Golden Gate Bridge. The music that leads to the climax is always important! The best part of the album is that the music is very much James Bond and incorporates, at the time, a more modern theme to the music. Duran Duran's song is still awesome to this day and can still hold a candle to any crappy song out there today! Overall, a great job well done!

Baby Sounds for Pets

Baby Sounds for Pets Review

I bought this CD because one of my dogs is a very anxious dog and thought that it may help ease her during all the changes with a new baby. I also thought that maybe she wouldn't notice since she is use to hearing noise come from the CD player. I was wrong. Both of my dogs came running upstairs once I turned the Baby Sounds CD on and they were trying to figure out where the crying was coming from; looking outside, etc. I did as the CD instructed by giving treats to them while playing it and they handled it very nicely. Now we will just wait and see what happens when the real live baby comes!

Have a Nice Day 13

Have a Nice Day 13 Review

Super Hits of the '70s: Have a Nice Day, Vol. 13 gives us ten great hits from the 1970s that really made the airwaves hot! These songs still sound great today on this very well digitally produced CD; and the artwork is pretty good as it always is in this multi CD series.

Maria Muldaur begins the tracks set with her hit entitled "Midnight At The Oasis." "Midnight At The Oasis" has a romantic, attractive melody that catches your attention and never lets it go. Maria sings this with a lot of sensitivity and that's probably a big reason why this song went so far the way it did in the `70s. The guitars work well and the percussion adds to the beauty of the number--awesome! Jim Stafford follows with another hit entitled "My Girl Bill." "My Girl Bill" hints at an alternative lifestyle--before turning into a song about two men who both love the same woman! I think "My Girl Bill" is very neatly done and I really like that number.

Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods turn in a bubblegum flavored anti-war song with "Billy, Don't Be A Hero;" this tune has a great melody as well. The guitars and percussion enhance the natural beauty of the song, too. Listen also for Paper Lace doing "The Night Chicago Died." The singing and percussion marking the beat stuns me with its creativity and good sound; and they play and sing "The Night Chicago Died" to perfection.

Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods return for another awesome hit--in my opinion--that they called "Who Do You Think You Are." "Who Do You Think You Are" sounds great and this is clearly a highlight of this album. Andy Kim also does a great job on "Rock Me Gently;" Andy sings this flawlessly with ladies doing backup harmonizing; and the guitar arrangement makes this number shine! First Class also does "Beach Baby." "Beach Baby" always makes me smile; this is easily one of my favorite tunes from the entire 1970s. First Class sounds a bit like The Beach Boys on this number but they hold their own well; and the musical arrangement uses the guitars and percussion really well. Billy Swan's "I Can Help" rocks with just enough of a country twist to make this number memorable; and Billy sings this one out like a pro!

Overall, this is one major installment in this multi CD series of great hits from the `70s. I highly recommend this for people looking for high quality controlled music from the `70s; and newcomers to this type of music will find this to be a great starter CD.

Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys

Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys Review

Some of the other reviews are correct. If your an audiophile and want the original recordings in their original sound you may not find it here. Also, if your wanting to find only the Beach Boy hits you remember you might want to buy one of the Greatest Hits albums. This box set has many songs never released to the public I believe. If you want the hits, plus some, and the recording method doesn't bother you then this is good buy. Personally, I do not have the high end equipment I didn't mind if there were songs I had never heard before. I am glad I bought this box set and enjoy it.

Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys Specifications

From "Surfin'" to "Kokomo," the first four discs of this box chart the Beach Boys' inimitable 30-year course. Here are all the hits and key album tracks, and an assortment of unreleased material that illuminates Brian Wilson and company's immense contribution to the development of pop music. (Especially fascinating are the assembled fragments from Wilson's abandoned 1966 masterwork, Smile.) A fifth disc features demos, radio spots, live tracks, and studio goodies for the hardcore fan. The set confirms Brian's hardworking genius, but also gives each member his due, especially the late Carl Wilson. Rock & roll music grew up with the Beach Boys, and this box is rock's best family album. --Ben Edmonds

Stars & Stripes: America's Greatest Hits

Stars & Stripes: America's Greatest Hits Review

I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.

Zappa in N.Y.

Zappa in N.Y. Review

I also was fortunate to see this concert tour. In fact it was my first experience with Zappa live (4 more times to follow). I remember beiing awestruck by the musicianship while laughing MAO at the lyrics and stage antics. I am a drummer so this album is particularly important because it contains the first recording of The Black Page, a notoriously difficult drumset arrangement and the piece that really put drummer Terry Bozzio on the map. The other high point for me on this recording is the astonshing brilliant vocals of Ray White on The Illonois Enema Bandit. It's something like a perverted gospel clasic.

The Anna Russell Album

The Anna Russell Album Review

I first bought the 90-minute cassette tape of this some years ago, and then bought the CD. I've discovered, from comparing the tape with the CD, that there are two pieces on the cassette tape that are missing from the CD (hence the 4-star rating, rather than a 5). The two missing pieces are: "Contemporary music for the tone-deaf singers: My Heart is Red", and "For the untrained singer: I Gave my Love a Cherry." Why the CD doesn't contain these two pieces is beyond me.

Other than that, it's a wonderful example of Anna Rusell at her best. Hopefully, you won't die laughing while listening to this, so that you can listen to it over and over again.

The Anna Russell Album Feature

  • Includes Russell's most famous and hilarious routines.

The Anna Russell Album Overview

Anna Russell combines her excellent knowledge of and training in opera with her brilliantly satirical wit to create hilarious send-ups of Wagner's The Ring cycle, Gilbert & Sullivan, and more. Whether you love opera or couldn't care less, Russell will have you in stitches.

The Anna Russell Album Specifications

This set of Anna Russell's inspired satirical monologues should be labeled with a warning notice. Why? Because after listening to her whirlwind explication of Wagner's Ring Cycle, even the most confirmed Wagnerite will be unable to listen to the Ring for weeks to come. Just listening to Russell declare in an incredulous voice: "I'm not making this up, y'know" is enough to induce you to shed bucketloads of laughter-induced tears. Gilbert and Sullivan fans will find their heroes savaged in her concoction of a typical G&S product, complete with a soprano lead who "loves below her station." Other targets include "the nymphs and shepherds" style of quavery English singing, complete with "hey-nonny-nonny's," coloratura mad scenes, and much else, including Russian folk songs, like her "Da, nyet, da, nyet." This disc is packed with laughs, chuckles, smiles, and everything. --Dan Davis

Ron White: You Can't Fix Stupid

Ron White: You Can't Fix Stupid Review

This is one funny fellow. People say that some of the material on this cd is found on other cds. Of course, this is true. It is like any other musical group or other genra, you just don't always have enough material to fill up a new album, so you fill it with some old stuff. If you want to laugh, and haven't heard this cd, this is one to buy.

Ron White: You Can't Fix Stupid Overview

Irreverent bad boy Ron White will crack you up with a nonstop stream of hilarious jokes and clever observations. In this brand-new stand-up performance, Ron explores the pitfalls of marriage, offers some hysterically funny advice on picking a spouse and introduces the unforgettable "Squirrel Man," plus much more. A well-loved Comedy Central favorite, star of the popular DVD They Call Me "Tater Salad" and the bestselling CD Drunk in Public, this extraordinary comedian will keep you laughing till your sides ache!

Dream A Little Dream: Original Soundtrack From The Vestron Motion Picture

Dream A Little Dream: Original Soundtrack From The Vestron Motion Picture Review

11 great songs that transport us back to a time of innocence and mischief too. Track #2. Time Runs Wild is my favorite! It's a song of pure joy and so uplifting. Track #5. Into The Mystic is full of nostalgia and is another of my favorite songs in this album. The music was well chosen and it blends perfectly well with the movie. A great album that always brings back so many wonderful memories.

Cruisin 1958

Cruisin 1958 Review

I own the entire set of the "Cruisin'" series. Most of the discs are entertaining, while a few are so poorly edited and full of replacement songs they're more aggravating than entertaining to listen to. From a production standpoint, "Cruisin'
1958" is the best this series has to offer. From beginning to the end, the presentation is seamless and flows beautifully. If any portion of this 35-minute segment was edited, I certainly couldn't hear it.
The program is great! Legendary personality Jack Carney of Wonderful WIL radio in St. Louis is your host for this Cruisin' installment. His smooth, friendly-sounding demeanor adds a lot to this pleasurable trip back to the summer of 1958.
The collection of songs on "Cruisin' 1958" is second to none: "At The Hop" - Danny and The Juniors; "Tequila" - The Champs; "Book Of Love" - The Monotones; "Rock And Roll Music" - Chuck Berry; "Short Shorts" - The Royal Teens; "Chantilly Lace" - The Big Bopper; "Get A Job" - The Silhouettes; "Rebel Rouser" - Duane Eddy; and a brand new song on WIL's Silver Dollar Survey, "Rockin' Robin" - Bobby Day. GREAT STUFF!

If you collect "Cruisin'" discs and have yet to purchase this one, what are you waiting for? If you're planning to start a "Cruisin'" collection, this is a good place to start!

Diana Princess of Wales Tribute

Diana Princess of Wales Tribute Review

Princess Diana died too young and tragically in 1997. She is one those iconic figures who young like Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and others. If she had lived, she would be in her fifties and still looking fabulous. She had a terrific sense of humor that comes across, a love and compassion for humankind, and deep love for her sons, William and Harry. In response to her tragic loss, the stars came out in force to remember her. The Chicken Shed Theatre has children serenading the lost princess with "I am in Love with the World." The Chicken Shed Theatre is not as well know as it should be but it's one of the finest theatres in London. The other songs like "Pavane," sung by the divine British soprano, Lesley Garrett CBE, inspired me to buy one of her compilations and she's brilliant singer. There is Queen's classic, "Who Wants to Live Forever," as well as so many others like Pavarotti, Annie Lennox, Eric Clapton CBE OBE, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, and so many others. I hope the money for this collection goes directly to charity because that's probably Diana would have wanted in the first place.

Diana Princess of Wales Tribute Overview

Given the multimedia frenzy that accompanied Princess Diana's untimely death, it's somehow appropriate that the tragedy should inspire this album--a 2 CD set featuring 36 old and new tracks by an array of international stars--with a portion of the proceeds going to a Memorial Fund established in the late Princess' name. But, with Diana's death as the only unifying thread (and a tenuous one at that), it's not a particularly consistent or cohesive listen. But it's hard to argue with such an impressive array of stars including Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, the Spice Girls, Barbra Streisand, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Puff Daddy, Aretha Franklin, R.E.M., Sinead O'Connor, Seal, George Michael, Des'ree, Bryan Ferry, and Michael Bolton (joining opera star Placido Domingo to perform "Ave Maria"). --Scott Schinder
